Excellent racing at Adobe Mountain Speedway for the Salute to Indy. Qualifying is always difficult and on Friday we did have a few hiccups, but at the end of the night, we had fast drivers with fast times and extra qualifying points heading into Saturday. For qualifying the restricted group went first, Jaydon Barnes did a 13.1 to top the first group, Jaxon Porter did a 12.8 in the 2nd group. On to the Non-Wing Outlaws, Jayden Huppert from Glendale AZ was the fastest with a 12.5. Jayden races at Plaza and Lemoore quite often where they also qualify so he knows how to get it done. The other top qualifiers where: Cameron La Rose, Chris Rahe, Cory Brown, JW Henderson and Cody Corey. The Jr Sprints also qualified on Friday with Dylan Langer fastest in group 1 and Brayden Jewett topping group 2.

Saturday was going to be hot, dry and windy so Aaron started on Friday as soon as the cars were off ripping the track and putting as much water down as possible down. On Saturday, both the Outlaws and Restricted cars did the wheel packing. It took a while and the cars were “mud packed” when they came off the track but it seemed to be worth it. Hot laps weren’t so hot, but the heats and mains (after more ripping and water) were excellent. On the Jr Sprint heats, Micah Porter and Julian Zayas won their heats with the hard charger going to Miken Iverson who improved 3 positions but couldn’t keep the passing points since he wasn’t able to make it on Friday. Restricted heat winners were Jennifer Owens and James Ferrin. On to the outlaws, with 36 cars going for 20 spots in the A-Feature, plus a 4 car invert from qual, things were going to be exciting. And then heat 1 happened (note announcer curse here), Brody Wake, went flag to flag for the victory, only 1 pass, Connor Lundy 4th to 3rd… hmm.. And then heat 2 happened, Cameron La Rose went 4th to 1st, Jim Mckinney 3rd to 2nd, 16 position changes in 8 laps!! That’s more like it. The rest of the heats didn’t provide that much action but were still interesting. Heat 3 Eric Bartlett gained 2 spots for the win, Heat 4 Axton Romero went flag to flag, Heats 5 and 6 were fun, both JW Henderson and Cody Corey worked up from 4th to 1st for their wins. We had 12 cars in each B-Main competing for 2 transfer positions, Xander Dundon and Casey Bauman transferred from the first B-Main, Dayton Shelton and Dalten Gabbard made the show from the second. Casey passed 2 cars to make it and Dalten passed 3.

On to the mains, in Jr Sprint, Micah Porter was able to make it past Brayden Jewett (2nd place) for the win, and earned $100 plus a wreath and a bottle of Milk which he promptly poured all over himself. Miken Iverson started in 9th passed 6 cars to come in 3rd. For the Restricted race, Jaxon Porter (older brother of Micah) went from 3rd to 1st. He earned $500, a wreath and a bottle of milk which he poured on himself. Clayton Wilson passed 8 cars to finish 2nd and James Ferin finished 3rd. The Non-Wing Outlaws were out for 33 laps on a wide race track. Cameron La Rose held the lead for all 33 laps with Jim Mckinney never more than a few cars lengths back, but there was tons of action back in the pack. There were a few drivers who found the fast line on the high side early. This made for some exciting passing on the outside, then they ran into other fast drivers (also on the high side). So the strategy had to change, both Josh Castro and Dalten Gabbard started throwing their cars to the low side and sliding in front of the car ahead. This was working pretty well until Josh caught up with Cody Corey, at this point, when Josh dove to the low side and slide up high, Cody went low and repassed Josh. This happened for at least 3 laps in a row, trading places at least once a lap and sometimes on both ends of the track on a single lap. Finally with about 2 laps to go, Josh made it stick as Cody couldn’t get the traction to repass. While this was happening, Dalten Gabbard who started last, made it up to 4th place passing 16 cars! It was like the World of Outlaws in Micros at Adobe! At the end of the night, Cameron earned $1000, a wreath and milk, Jim had an extra $500 in his pocket, Josh earned $250. The rest of the finishers were paid on a sliding scale down to 10th and after that (and restricted plus jr sprints) were all paid, and even the non-finishers got some gas money.

There’s no racing on the Adobe ovals again until September, but there will be improvements to the facility. Ted and Aaron will not be taking the summer off, so we’ll see even more great racing action this fall.
